Walking: Less risk of diabetes and hypertension |
Walking: Less risk of diabetes and hypertension. In particular, something as simple as walking can reduce the risk of diabetes by up to 12% and more than 4% of having high blood pressure. In other words, walking is a healthy option and, above all, a safe investment to protect our health from pathologies such as diabetes, high levels of tension and cholesterol. And another argument to start walking, the benefits are similar, and just as effective, than running.
Physical exercise is synonymous with health, recognized benefits that we can take advantage of by doing something as simple and everyday as walking. Benefits that translate into reducing the risks of suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol - hypercholesterolemia - and diabetes. This has been confirmed by a new study, whose results, published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, only reinforce the importance of staying active and avoiding sedentary lifestyle. A study that also investigates a specific physical activity, walking, ensuring that it can be as beneficial as running if we look for an ally to prevent the pathologies outlined above. Thus, in particular, walking reduces the risk of high cholesterol by 7%, a percentage that increases up to 12% in the case of diabetes.
The study, conducted by researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley laboratory, United States, suggests that both walking - at a moderate or vigorous pace - and walking, when energy expenditure is similar, share benefits and efficacy. The answer, as the study authors explain, is that the same muscle groups are involved in both physical activities.
The conclusions are not precipitated, since the effects of both practices (walking and running) have been analyzed for a period of 6 years. Specifically, the effects on risk factors of ischemic heart disease have been evaluated, with the participation of more than 33,000 runners and another 15,000 who chose to walk as physical exercise. For the study, the data of total distances traveled and metabolic expenditure were taken into account, regardless of the time invested in their practice.
And the result, in a nutshell, is that the more active we are, the more benefits we report to our health. According to the study, the risks of hypertension were reduced by 4.2% among runner participants, a higher percentage when choosing to walk at a moderate pace, 7.2%. Reduction of risks that was also found to be greater when walking in cases of hypercholesterolemia, that is, elevated cholesterol levels, with a reduction of 7%, compared to 4.3% in the case of runners.
However, perhaps the virtues of physical exercise where the most reflex has been in the case of diabetes. Thus, according to the results of the study, given a similar metabolic expense, both walking and running reduce the risk of diabetes by 12%.
Practicing physical exercise, although healthy, is a habit that we do not always follow. However, laziness, lack of motivation or being in low form - among other excuses to keep us inactive - do not work, because this study shows that with something as simple and everyday as walking you can gain health and quality lifetime. Walking, in other words, is a safe investment and a protector for our health. Walking is a more sustainable activity.
